Belize Barrier Reef Snorkeling

I remember my first time snorkeling in Belize on the Barrier Reef.  The reef was amazing, it was so beautiful and there was so much action!  Fish were swimming around here and there going about their business, guarding eggs, protecting their territory, finding food, finding shelter, looking for mates, getting their teeth cleaned, or their wounds checked.  There is rush hour too when fish are feeding or their is a change of guard when the day time critters go to sleep and the nocturnal creatures come out. All this activity occurs againts a backdrop of beautiful coral in many different shapes and colors that would remind you of a spring garden.  Sprinkle in a couple passing rays, turtles, manatees and sharks, and now you have the Belize Barrier Reef.

Right now while you read this there is a whole other world under the sea living on the Belize Barrier Reef.

If you would like to explore this undersea world with Sea Sports Belize, this is how your day will go.

If you are staying in Belize City, we can pick you up at your hotel.  If you will be visiting Belize for the day on a cruise ship, you will be shuttled to the “Fort Street Tourism Village” where all cruise ship passengers arrive in Belize.  Our shop is less than one block from here and is about a 10 minute walk.  Map and directions are provided once trip is confirmed.

Where do we go?

We have some very special snorkeling sites that we like to take our guests.  They are along the Belize Barrier Reef from Gallow’s Point to Sergeant’s Caye.  Where we go depends on the group and weather conditions.

What are the water depths and water conditions like?

The snorkeling sites are within 5-15 feet of water so you can see the corals and reef fish and other marine life up-close and take some amazing pictures if you bring and underwater camera.

The snorkel sites are inside the barrier reef and are protected from the easterly winds so the waters are usually calm and clear.

How do we get into and out of the water?

Before getting into the water your professional Snorkel Master will help you prepare your mask so it does not fog up by using defog or Joy liquid detergent.  If you have baby shampoo you can put some in small container and use this also.

Once your equipment is ready you will sit on the side of the boat, called the gunwale, and put you fins and mask and snorkel on.  Then you will ease yourself into the water.

To get out of the water there will be a ladder that you will need to climb up.  It is a sturdy ladder that you can easily pull yourself up on and our Captain will be there to assist.  Before getting out of the water you will take off your fins and pass them up to the Captain, and then jump in the boat and move forward making room for others to get in. The Captain will pass you your gear so you can keep it together near your seat.

What’s for Lunch?

The typical lunch served during the day includes turkey or tuna sandwiches with chips and cookies, soft drinks and water and also fruit.  We have several small islands that we visit for our lunch break where you can see how Belizean fishermen live.

Do you provide excursions for 2 people. My son and myself will be porting in Belize on July 27, 2011. I am looking to book an excursion for just the 2 of us.

Hi Deborah:

We do provide excursions for groups of 2 since we can combine them with other families that are on the same ship coming into Belize the same day. Please let me know what ship you are on and I can see what we have scheduled so far.

Morning Deborah:
We normally have a limit of 8 persons unless someone books a private charter and has a larger group. So what we would like to do is wait until we receive some other inquiries for this day then we can combine the smaller groups. I will email you again as soon as we receive additional inquiries for this day. Please let me know if I can answer any other questions while we wait!

We are a group of 8 adults plus a 19 month old toddler sailing on NCL Spirit. We will port in Belize on Thursday, May 26. Do you have any snorkeling tours open?

Hi Becky: Yes we do still have space this day and could offer your group of 9 a private snorkeling charter on the Belize Barrier Reef. If some in your group would want to stay on an island and relax under some tall coconut trees then we may want to also visit Goff’s Caye which is very beautiful. Regards, Linda
